Dolmabahce Palace is on the European shore of the Bosphorus at Besiktas, and unlike most sights near the hotel it needs a journey rather than a walk.
Practical details: visits are guided only and follow a fixed route. Two ticket types exist — the Selamlik, the state apartments, or a combined ticket including the Harem. Closed Mondays. Bags go through security and large luggage is not admitted. Allow ninety minutes for the Selamlik alone.
Highlights are the ceremonial hall with its 4.5-tonne chandelier, the Baccarat crystal staircase, and the room where Ataturk died in 1938, where the clocks remain at 09:05.
From Hotel Yasmak Sultan take the T1 tram to Kabatas and walk five minutes; around thirty to thirty-five minutes door to door.
