        Hagia Sophia

        near_me 490 m from Hotel Yasmak Sultan

Hagia Sophia has stood for almost fifteen centuries, and in that time it has been a cathedral, a mosque, a museum, and a mosque again. Few buildings anywhere carry that many lives in one structure, and the layers are visible the moment you step inside: Byzantine mosaics on one wall, Ottoman calligraphy medallions on the next, both under the same enormous dome.

That dome was the largest in the world for nearly a thousand years. Standing beneath it, what strikes most visitors is not the decoration but the space itself — the way the light falls through the upper windows and makes the whole ceiling seem to float.

Entry is free, and modest clothing is required; women should cover their heads. Visits pause during prayer times, so the quietest hours are usually early morning, right after opening.

From Hotel Yasmak Sultan it is a walk of about ten minutes through Sirkeci and up towards Sultanahmet. Most guests pair it with Topkapi Palace and the Blue Mosque in a single morning, since all three sit within a few hundred metres of each other.
