Karakoy sits on the northern side of the Golden Horn, directly across the bridge from Eminonu. The streets between the ferry terminal and Galata now hold most of the city’s independent design shops.
Practical notes: ceramics, jewellery, leather goods and stationery are the main categories; prices are fixed and cards are accepted everywhere; most shops open around eleven and close by seven, and many take Mondays off. Several studios will pack fragile purchases properly for a flight.
From Hotel Yasmak Sultan you can walk down to Eminonu and across Galata Bridge in about twenty minutes, or take the tram two stops. Walking back over the bridge at sunset is the better half of the trip.
